Whether due to medication, perfume or simply hormonal variations (adolescence, pregnancy, the pill), hyperpigmentation spots affect us all and can quickly ruin our lives.

Why and when do these dark spots appear?
"They are the result of a dysfunction of the melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin (the pigment responsible for tanning): deregulated by the sun's UV rays, melanocytes produce excess melanin. This melanin rises to the skin's surface in a disorganized fashion, creating the famous dark spot.
But the sun isn't the only culprit!
Hormones can also be a factor in hyperpigmentation: numerous hormone receptors are distributed across the skin's surface, making the skin sensitive to hormonal changes. During pregnancy or adolescence, your body produces much more female hormones, which increase melanin synthesis in the skin, generating dark spots from the 1st exposure to sunlight. This is known as the pregnancy mask!
What ingredients should be avoided and what reflexes should be adopted?
Since 90% of UV rays pass through clouds, apply a anti-UV shield SPF 50 PA +++ and avoid applying photosensitizing products to the skin which will cause hyperpigmentation in the area of application:
- Perfume,
- Alcohol and antiseptics,
- AHAs,
- Certain essential oils (bergamot, cedar, lime, lavender, vanilla),
- Red dyes (eosin, fluorescein, rose of Bengal), or ketoprofen in certain anti-inflammatory gels.
Be careful, even exposing your hands to the sun behind a windscreen while driving a car is enough to trigger a reaction!
Taking certain oral medications can also lead to pigmentation disorders on all parts of the body exposed to the sun: antibiotics, antidepressants, antiallergics, anti-acne medication or the contraceptive pill... Ask your doctor for advice on how to take your medication when exposed to the sun, even for a short time. "
